WALK, ROOTED, GROUNDED

Colossians 2:6-10

“Therefore as you receive Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.” (vs.6, 7 ESV)

The Apostle Paul states three things he sees in those who have received Christ.  We see them, especially in verses 6 and 7 of this second chapter of his letter to the church at Colosse.  Paul states them as walking in Christ, having been firmly rooted in Christ, and then being built up in Christ.  Now there are three concepts that are passed on to us.

  1. We are called to walk like a person.  That is the way we are to function.  That means we are people who have experienced the new birth and thus are now functioning as those who are justified, regenerated, and saved.  That sounds to me like the initial step in salvation.
  2. We are called to be rooted like a tree.  That is, we are to be founded.  To be so rooted means we must have those spiritual roots which go down into the lordship of Christ in our lives.  That is what we mean by the entire sanctifying grace of Jesus Christ.  The root of sin is eliminated and the root of God’s grace takes hold and we flourish as a spiritual tree.
  3. We are called to be grounded like a building.  That is how our Christian life is to be fashioned.  What this says is, that having been called to walk in Christ, and having been rooted firmly in Christ, that the building of our Christian life and character goes on and on, until the Lord says the building is complete on earth and He takes us home to be with Him in heaven.
