“WHAT’S GOOD FOR THE GOOSE . . .”

Genesis 29:21-30

“In everything, then, do to others as you would have them do to you. . .” Matthew 7:12 (BSB)

You’ve heard the expression “What’s good for the goose is good for the gander.”  It means “The chickens will surely come home to roost.”  In Biblical parlance, it means “God is not mocked.  Whatsoever a man sows that shall he also reap.”  The principle is borne out in the lives of Jacob and his father-in-law Laban, who deceived each other numbers of times.

Remember it started when Laban gave Jacob Leah instead of Rachel for a wife.  Then Jacob tricked Laban, or so he thought, with his methods of building a flock (Genesis 30:37-43).  Of course, Jacob was not new to deception, having tricked his brother Esau twice – once for the birthright, and once again for the blessing of his father.

The cycle continues to this day.  From the Savings and Loan scandals to theft of time or materials from the boss, it continues.  People deceive and are deceived with little thought about the consequences.  But consequences do come and will continue as our culture continues to reap the results of earlier moral mismanagement.  Each decision we make to be morally upright helps to hold our society together.  “Whatever a man sows that shall he also reap.”

“Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye steadfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.”  What good news!
